Kombucha! Nerd Sports

4 06 2008

AV and I have joined a trivia team at a local pub, and we play on Tuesday nights. This trivia is sponsored by Geeks Who Drink, and demands that you listen carefully to the quizmaster and write the answers down with pen and paper. We were recruited by a friend of mine from college, and have played for the last five or six weeks with increasing success. Last week we earned third place.

We knew last night would be good when the visual round (identify the pictures) was “South Park Celebrities.” AV and I knew all eight. That was good (and sad). There were also rounds on musicals – our whole team worked hard to hash out six of seven correct answers – gastronomic trends, in which AV came up with “Israeli Couscous” and “Kombucha” for a bilious-tasting tea, and Sesame Street characters. I supplied “Don Music” after hearing him say, “I’ll never get it!” and bang his head on the piano (this was a regular feature of my own childhood). We went into sudden death in a three-way-tie for first place, and then blew it on a round about presidents … proof that all the studying of presidents I did for Jeopardy! did not stick in the head. Thanks to Cosmo Kramer, though, I was able to correctly identify our eighth president as Martin Van Buren. When AV and I left last night, our team was in second.

I woke this morning to find out that a scoring error in round eight actually made the sudden death – in the words of the quizmaster – shenanigans, and that we actually won last night! So, our team, “What an incredible smell you’ve discovered,” starts off June with a bang. We’re obviously taking a month-long hiatus, but are looking forward to bringing AV’s rested mind back from our trip to play some more.
