While in Pittsburgh, I’m planning a food-style experiment. I am leaving the safety and comfort of AV’s cooking sphere temporarily, so this forces me to figure out how to eat on my own and avoid the fast-food or convenience food temptation.
Although it’s probably not a good idea to change too many habits all at once (since living solo in a new city, starting a doctoral program, and learning a dead language four mornings each week for aren’t system-rattling enough), I actually see the move as an excellent opportunity to adopt some new habits that will provide deep structure for my new activities.
In the spirit of experimentation, I’m planning to integrate as much raw food as possible into my diet, attempting to observe the “as much raw food as possible before dinner” dictum. As it goes, AV and I are generally pretty healthy eaters. We’ve ousted most of the HFCS from our diet, and try to avoid processed foods as a general rule. We are well-versed and attentive to where our food comes from. Raw food also helps me to avoid learning how to “cook.” I’m just kidding about that. Except on Tuesdays, I’ll try to make dinner for myself, which will be hilarious (I’m sure) and disastrous in parts.
My plan is to keep a food journal of sorts, occasionally annotated with funny stories about why I’m a terrible presence in the kitchen. Maybe I’ll learn how to cook, or maybe I’ll memorize the phone number to Primanti Brothers.
